The order explicitly stated that upon the disbursement of these funds, all parties would be thoroughly discharged and released from all obligations.

He lived then on Homeview Avenue, a quiet enough street, but stillness was never a permanent resident in Tony’s life. On a cool March evening, the dusk settled over East Columbia Street, a police cruiser clocked the Pontiac exceeding the limit. It was a minor offense — a citation, a plea of no contest, a meager fine — but it was the opening entry in a ledger that would expand to document the wanderings of a deeply restless soul.

That restlessness soon manifested as a profound instability. Within a year, the first threads of economic precariousness began to fray. In June of 1991, Krieg Brothers Property Investments initiated a civil eviction against him, an action that dragged him before Judge Rastatter’s court. It was dismissed by July, but the machinery of displacement had been set into motion. He was a man perpetually packing boxes, forever one step ahead of the bailiff’s summons.

By 1993, the collateral damage of a chaotic life spilled over into his home. He had married Lorraine, but whatever warmth had initially drawn them together had curdled into irreconcilable distance. In March of that year, residing in an apartment on Primm Drive — the first of many apartments he would occupy in that complex — Tony filed for a dissolution of the marriage. It was a messy, hesitant severance. A petition for dissolution was filed and then abruptly withdrawn on a Tuesday in late March. The very same day, however, a more aggressive complaint for divorce was lodged. Judge Thomas Capper presided over the untangling of their lives. By May, Tony was granted permanent custody of their children, a rare and heavy responsibility for a man who seemed entirely incapable of keeping his own footing. He drove a yellow two-door Toyota at the time, frequently cited for expired tags, as if the very licensing of his existence was an administrative burden he could not bear.

Springfield noticed multiple women that went missing between 1996-1997 including Angela Hall, Michelle’s sister. This area only blocks away from the Nite Owl Bar is known as; “The Killing Fields of Springfield” This 4-block area has a high volume of drug arrests and prostitution. From 2004 to 2010 a serial killer named Prentiss Hare resided at 112 South Race street. In Springfield, Ohio, between 1992 and 1993 it was this area that serial killer and rapist William Kessler Sapp murdered three females, and sexual assault others. One of the women was 31-year-old Belinda Anderson, last seen exactly in this area.

In January 1998, Rice briefly moved out of the county to Piqua on Roosevelt Avenue, before being drawn back to the familiar, worn streets of Springfield. Tibbetts Avenue. York Street. Jefferson Street. Grand Avenue. Each address was a temporary shelter; each move, perhaps, an attempt to outrun the accumulating paper trail. But the municipal court’s memory is long and perfectly indexed.

In 1996, he was caught behind the wheel of a gold Ford sedan at the intersection of Western and Main, driving under a suspended license and foolishly attempting to bypass a traffic gate. The following year, a woman named Tangela Chester dragged him back into the sterile air of the civil court for another eviction proceeding. Tony Rice was a man defined by his vehicles as much as his failures.

He traded cars with the frequency of a man changing coats in unpredictable weather. There was the black two-door Pontiac in which he was pulled over on Home Road, caught speeding without a seatbelt. There was a silver Ford van he piloted recklessly, changing lanes improperly and bearing fictitious plates near North Limestone. There is a specific kind of Midwestern desperation that breeds amateur enterprise. In October of 1999, Tony attempted a hustle. The Clark County Sheriff’s office cited him for operating a motor vehicle business without a license. It was an attempt, however misguided and legally deficient, to carve out a living, to transform his constant shuffling of automobiles into a bona fide trade. Like all his endeavors, it collapsed under the weight of municipal scrutiny. He pled guilty, paid the fine, and retreated further into the margins.

On December 6, 2000, residing now at 633 York Street, the police arrived at his door for a far more sinister reason than an expired registration. A charge of domestic violence was levied against him. That same year, 2003, he divorced a woman named Kimberly Nadine Foster, though the date the two were actually married remains an unknown fragment in his timeline.

Hilbun’s record is a matter of public court and law-enforcement documents in Louisiana and Ohio.

In 1993, in Louisiana, he was convicted of severe violent felonies — kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and aggravated crime against nature (rape) — and sentenced to 25 years, though he did not serve the full term. In 2007–2008, he was sought by the U.S. Marshals and Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers, who labeled him “armed and dangerous,” in connection with the molestation of a 14-year-old; subsequent charges included carnal knowledge of a juvenile. In 2014, records show convictions for taking a controlled substance into a penal institution and for failure to register, resulting in a two-year prison sentence.

Then, on October 26, 2019, in Greenville, Ohio, Hilbun forced his way into a home by kicking in the door, wielding a machete. He tried to drag a woman out of the residence against her will; when a man intervened, Hilbun stabbed him in the face, back, and shoulder, causing critical injuries that required surgery and seventeen stitches. He was charged with aggravated burglary (a first-degree felony) and felonious assault (a second-degree felony), and on January 17, 2020, he was sentenced to six years in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (Darke County Common Pleas; reported by the Daily Advocate, January 21, 2020).

For the factual integrity of the Amanda Ward-Romine investigation, we need to be precise about why Ralph Richard DePriest appears in this case file at all. He is not a suspect. There is no proof or evidence connecting him to Amanda’s disappearance. Investigators map the known, local offenders around a victim to understand the ambient danger of a place — and that, and only that, is what this installment does.

But the ambient danger of Amanda’s corridor was real, and it was documented. In the summer of 2013, a registered Tier II sex offender with a history of targeting incapacitated women was living at 1579 Warder Street — the same short stretch of the near-northeast side that held Whitey’s Tavern (1070 Warder) and the Avondale Avenue houses at the center of this case. His name is Ralph Richard DePriest, and his record begins with something almost no case file contains: as a boy, he stood at the feet of a serial killer.

The boy at the crime scene

On August 22, 1992, two Springfield girls — Phree Morrow, 12, and Martha Leach, 11 — were raped and murdered near a pond behind Schuler’s Bakery. The crime is a matter of settled law: in State v. Sapp (2004), the Supreme Court of Ohio affirmed that William K. Sapp raped and killed both girls, later killed a third victim, and was sentenced to death. DNA tied Sapp to the murders, and he confessed.

Ralph DePriest was fourteen years old that day, the nephew of one of Sapp’s associates. According to the record in State v. Sapp, DePriest was brought to the scene, saw the two girls lying unconscious, was made by Sapp to take part in the degradation of the victims, and then was threatened by Sapp with death if he ever told. He turned away, the record says, before the final blow.

That is the origin the source points to. Beth’s argument — and it is an argument — is that DePriest’s later crimes echoed what he witnessed as a boy.

What DePriest was convicted of

Fifteen years later, DePriest committed the crime that put him on the registry. The account is drawn from the Springfield Police investigation and the Clark County court file, State of Ohio v. Ralph Richard DePriest (Case No. 07CR1186).

In November 2007, at a Springfield residence, DePriest gave a female relative — left redacted here — enough alcohol that she passed out, and then sexually assaulted her. When she briefly woke, per the court record, he leaned over her and asked, “You’re not going to tell anyone about this, right?” Interviewed by detectives, he admitted to giving her the alcohol and to the intercourse, saying he had been drinking and did not remember everything he did.

On April 23, 2008, DePriest pleaded guilty. On May 15, 2008, he was convicted of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor (Ohio Revised Code 2907.04), a third-degree felony, sentenced to two years in the Ohio State Penitentiary, and classified a Tier II sex offender. He was released February 18, 2010. By the summer of 2013, the Ohio Sex Offender Registry listed his address as 1579 Warder Street, Springfield.

The pattern the record shows is specific: DePriest, like the men he was around as a boy, targeted a woman who had been rendered unconscious, and used the same instrument of silence — you’re not going to tell — that Sapp had used on him. The previous installment laid out what is documented: two sisters in Amanda Ward-Romine’s orbit, and Jessika Rowland’s twenty-five-year arrest record across six states. This installment does something different, and we want to be exact about what it is. It reasons from that record toward a hypothesis — and a hypothesis is not a finding.

There is a pattern in the timeline. Again and again, a violent incident or a disappearance occurs in Ohio, and within days Jessika leaves for Florida. As an investigator reviewing the file, that pattern is striking. It is also, on its own, only a pattern — circumstantial proximity, not proof. Proximity does not equal guilt, and coincidence is not conspiracy. We hold both of those thoughts at once through everything that follows.

What we do below is walk the coincidences the record actually contains, then set out — clearly, as a labeled hypothesis — how a prosecutor might read them. Then we tell you, just as plainly, everything that hypothesis cannot establish.

What follows is a speculative reconstruction and investigative theory built from the documented evidence in the previous installment. It is one possible reading of the facts — not an assertion of what happened, and not a claim that any named person is responsible for any death or disappearance.

The coincidences the record contains

Begin with the anomaly at the center of Jessika’s timeline: the sudden departures, and how often they line up with a death or a vanishing in her orbit.

Amanda Ward-Romine — June 2013. In the same month Amanda vanished, Jessika fled south to Horse Cave, Kentucky, where she was arrested in the company of Daniel Steenbergen, a registered sex offender and her later co-defendant on a Kentucky burglary case.

Police reports from that Kentucky arrest are said to note another woman present who left before she could be questioned. Was that woman Amanda? Or another woman among the missing? The record poses the question; it does not answer it.

On the 2019 Missing in Ohio podcast, Amanda's sister Aliya stated that someone told detectives a confidential informant drove Danny Romine and two or three others to Kentucky for a drug deal in June 2013, and that a body they believed to be Amanda was with them — and that the informant later led detectives to Kentucky, then recanted, claiming he had lied, and served two years for it.

Aria Spradling — September 2013. Aria Spradling died in 2013; her body was found November 18, 2013, in Art Van Atta Park in Vandalia, Ohio, roughly two miles from the Harem, per WHIO reporting. Medical examiners were reportedly unable to determine a cause of death. A regular performer at the Harem since 2009, she disappeared on September 29, 2013, after leaving the club. Eaton Police Chief Chad DePew told reporters he had been told a woman was seen running naked in the road before three men in a minivan pulled her in and drove off (WHIO). Jessika remained entrenched in that same club's world at the time.

Danny Romine — December 2015. Daniel "Danny" Romine was found dead of an apparent drug overdose on December 15, 2015, as established earlier in this case file. He was the patron who had watched Jessika and Amanda dance, who bailed Jessika out in 2010, who let her tend bar at Whitey's, and who — by her arrest records — kept her supplied with cocaine and heroin. Jessika was in Springfield at the time of his death, and left for Florida shortly after.

Amber Whitmer — June 2016. Amber Whitmer is the missing woman at the center of Unsolved Ohio's Case 2; she disappeared from Springfield in June 2016. That same month, Jessika drifted back to Springfield and was arrested for a transaction involving drugs and prostitution.

Lacie Henry — December 2016. Lacie Henry was killed by gunfire in her own home on December 8, 2016, in what the record treats as a narcotics dispute; her two young children were present. Described as a close friend and drug supplier to the Rowland sisters. Jessika was in Springfield for about seven days spanning the window of the killing, then returned to Florida.

Pamela Childress — July 2017. Pamela Childress, a cousin to Jessika and Jennifer, died July 28, 2017, of a heroin "hot shot"; two people — Michael Jerome Crowley II and Kristie M. Bevington — were later charged in her death. Both were figures within the sisters' documented social network.

There is also a Florida thread — Prentiss Hare, a man from Springfield the source describes as a serial killer, tied to the July 2015 death of Michael James Frazier in Jacksonville, the subsequent death of witness Tiffany Chambers in Springfield, and the December 2015 strangulation of Deshun D. Lumford in Springfield.

To track Jessika Rowland through the American landscape, the source argues, is to follow a hurricane by the wreckage it leaves behind. That is a vivid line, and it is the authors’ characterization — a way of describing a pattern of coincidences, not a statement that she caused any of these deaths.

Motive and means: a labeled hypothesis

Everything in this section is an investigative hypothesis — a reasoned guess about how the documented facts might fit, offered to generate leads. None of it is established fact. None of it is a charge. Jessika Rowland has not been accused by any authority of involvement in any of these deaths.

The documented basis: Aria worked the same club; witnesses described a woman pulled into a minivan by three men; Jessika’s 2011 arrests establish her entrenchment in the local drug trade and her proximity to violent men. The hypothesis: that Jessika had the connections to coordinate such an act. Speculation; no evidence; no charge.

Danny Romine. Hypothesized motive: silencing a co-conspirator or severing a compromised supply line. Hypothesized means: a lethal “hot shot” of narcotics. The documented basis: Jessika’s long history with Danny, her presence in Springfield at his death, her departure afterward. The hypothesis: that as an addict and dealer she had the means to administer a fatal dose. Speculation. The documented finding is an apparent overdose, not a homicide.

Amber Whitmer. Hypothesized motive: eliminating a witness or a debt. Hypothesized means: trafficking or targeted disappearance through her network. The documented basis: the coincidence of Jessika's June 2016 Springfield arrest with Amber's disappearance, and the broader Hare-adjacent network. The source also raises — as a question — whether Jessika was connected to Brian Stoops. Speculation; no evidence; no charge.

Lacie Henry. Hypothesized motive: eradicating a drug debt. Hypothesized means: a contracted home invasion or acting as a trusted front. The documented basis: Lacie supplied the sisters; Jessika’s seven-day presence spanned the killing window. The hypothesis: posed entirely as questions in the source. Speculation; no evidence; no charge.

The “Blonde Barbie” comparison

What follows is analysis and analogy — the authors’ argument about a behavioral archetype. It is opinion and speculation, not a statement of fact about Jessika Rowland, who has never been charged with any violent crime.

The source argues that Jessika’s persona resembles the “Ken and Barbie” archetype — a reference to Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo, the Canadian couple convicted for the abduction, rape, and murder of teenage girls in Ontario between 1990 and 1992. The recovered evidence in that case established Homolka as a calculated, active participant who used a conventional, non-threatening appearance to disarm victims — including her own younger sister, Tammy — before their assaults and deaths.

The comparison the source draws is behavioral: that a woman’s ordinary, unthreatening presence can lower another woman’s guard in a world otherwise populated by predatory men. It is a measured, noncommittal reply — supportive of the documentation, careful about the conclusions.

What remains open

Strip away the hypotheses and here is what the record actually leaves standing. A woman moved through the same clubs, the same men, and the same drug networks as Amanda Ward-Romine and at least four other people who are now dead or missing. Her departures repeatedly coincided with those events. She has been arrested across six states for twenty-five years without a prison term. None of that is evidence that she harmed anyone. All of it is a set of documented coincidences that no investigation has ever resolved — in either direction.

Both were connected to Daniel “Danny” Romine — the man Amanda would marry. The sisters shared that world with the same cast of violent offenders, narcotics distributors, and transient figures that runs through every installment of this case.

And one fact stands out from Jessika Rowland’s record with almost mathematical strangeness. For twenty-five consecutive years — beginning in 2001, when she was nineteen — she has been arrested, often in a new state each time. Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New York. A quarter-century of arrests, a trail of outstanding warrants. And in all that time, the doors of a state penitentiary have never once closed behind her.

Contrast that with the woman who shared her neon-lit orbit. Amanda Ward-Romine was swallowed whole by the same system — five years for a fifth-degree drug-trafficking felony, the kind of low-level charge that Jessika has beaten, dodged, or outrun for two and a half decades. Jennifer Rowland went to prison too; she and Amanda were incarcerated at the same time. Jessika never has.

The sisters and the Harem

The timeline is anchored by the “Harem” strip club in Dayton, Ohio. Jessika Rowland graduated Kenton Ridge High School in 2000 and began dancing at the Harem in 2001, taking a break in 2003 around the birth of her first child. On February 14, 2006 — a Valentine’s Day wedding — she married a roofer named Jason Erin Iddings. She returned to the club, and continued dancing there until roughly 2012, when she moved from the stage to online adult work.

It was on that same stage that Jessika danced alongside Amanda Ward — not yet Amanda Romine — from 2003 until Amanda’s own departure for prison. And it was inside those same walls that both women came to know Daniel Romine, the wealthy patron the dancers called the “Fat Man,” who paid in cash or narcotics and whom Amanda eventually married.

The Harem became something of a family workplace. Jessika’s sister, Jennifer Rowland of Springfield, began dancing there in 2003 and remained until a police sting operation ended her tenure. On September 29, 2017, eleven people were indicted on multiple charges following a raid on the club; Jennifer Rowland was among those named in the coverage (WDTN, “11 people indicted on multiple charges from strip club raid,” Thea Emroll, September 29, 2017).

Danny Romine's connection to Jessika is likewise documented. He bailed her out of the Clark County Jail on July 22, 2010, after an OVI arrest; she tended bar at his tavern, Whitey's; and by her own arrest records she moved through his supply of cocaine and heroin. There is a photograph of Jessika with Danny inside the house at 937 Avondale Avenue — the same Avondale address that recurs throughout this case.

None of that makes either sister a party to what happened to Amanda. It establishes only that their world and Amanda’s were, for years, the same world.

Every entry is a matter of public record — arrests, citations, filings, convictions — and case numbers are given where the record supplies them. An arrest is not a conviction; a charge is an allegation. Convictions are noted as such.

Phase I — Early adulthood and Florida traffic inception (1999–2005)

• February 26, 1999 — Springfield, OH: first appearance in the judicial record, a civil filing (Case 99CV00076, Jessika Rowland et al. v. Cheng T. Pan MD et al.), Clark County Common Pleas. Establishes the family’s residential anchor at 1819 Biscayne Drive, Springfield.

• October 30, 2001 — Nassau County, FL: misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Case 01001315MMAXYX). State entered nolle prosequi (prosecution declined) August 19, 2002.

• January 4, 2002 — Nassau County, FL: cited as an unrestrained front-seat passenger over 18 (Case 02000376TRAXYX).

• May 5, 2002 — Nassau County, FL: open-container violation / consumption of alcohol by a driver.

• May 14, 2002 — Fernandina Beach, FL: stopped by Florida Highway Patrol; cited for improper display of vehicle registration (Case 16-2002-TR-103599). Provides an alternative date of birth (April 23, 1981) and a Fernandina Beach address.

• March 15–19, 2003 — Nassau County, FL: multiple traffic citations within 96 hours — careless driving, seatbelt, no proof of insurance, registration, a second open-container (Cases 03002465–03002473TRAXYX), filed March 19, 2003.

• January 17, 2004 — Springfield, OH: stopped by Ohio Highway Patrol; seatbelt charge (Case 400708/1); found guilty by waiver February 4, 2004.

Phase II — Domestic change, violent fracturing, narcotic cultivation (2006–2010)

• February 3, 2006 — Clark County, OH: marriage application with Jason Erin Iddings; occupation listed “Server/Dancer.” Marriage solemnized February 14, 2006.

• May 25, 2007 — Springfield, OH: police document a conflict on 1064 Warder Street; Rowland is assaulted by an associate, Amanda Young, on leaving a tavern.

• September 16, 2007 — Springfield, OH: jailed after a domestic dispute with Iddings at 2579 Tecumseh Avenue; charged with Endangering Children (M1) and Reckless Operation (M1) (Case 07 201641). Dismissed December 6, 2007.

• October 14, 2007 — Springfield, OH: disturbance at the same address; during the investigation Rowland acts as a confidential informant, exposing a marijuana grow operation; a search warrant yields cultivation materials in the basement.

• September 24, 2008 — Springfield, OH: arrested at 551 E. Northern Avenue, Apt. 2; a marijuana plant is found on a kitchen windowsill; charged with Illegal Drug Manufacture/Cultivation (M4).

• April 17, 2009 / May 24, 2009 — Springfield, OH: traffic citations and an improper-passing conviction (Cases 904849, 906532).

• August 12, 2009 — Moorefield, OH: criminal trespass in a park after hours (M4).

• March 19, 2010 — Springfield, OH: driving without a license and marked-lanes convictions (Case 1002570).

• July 22, 2010 — Springfield, OH: arrested after weaving on East Main Street; fails field sobriety, registers a 0.131 BAC; states she is a bartender at Whitey’s Tavern; released from custody directly to Daniel “Danny” Romine. Convicted of OVI (M1) (Case 1008035).

• August 29–30, 2010 — Springfield, OH: social-media records place her at a local lake and inside Whitey’s Tavern with Amanda Ward-Romine and Daniel Romine.

Phase III — Opiate escalation, theft, prostitution, Kentucky extradition (2011–2017)

• March 31, 2011 — Springfield, OH: high-risk felony stop at Greenlawn Arbors (745 Villa Road) after surveillance tracked a stolen 2007 Ford Fusion; arrested with an associate, Nathan Roberts; six syringes, a burnt tablespoon, and liquid heroin recovered. Admits daily heroin use. Charged with Receiving Stolen Property (F4) and Possession of Drug Abuse Instruments (M2).

• December 3–29, 2011 — Springfield, OH: implicated in a felony vehicle theft; a borrowed 2010 Dodge Charger found stripped and abandoned; charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (Case 11CRB05213).

• December 1, 2012 — Campbell County, Newport, KY: public intoxication and paraphernalia (Case 12-M-03164).

• July 11, 2013 — Hart County, Horse Cave, KY: charged with 1st-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), marijuana possession, and a probation violation.

• July 24, 2013 — Montgomery County, OH: indicted for Possession of Cocaine (F5) under five grams (Case 2013 CR 02330); arrest December 30, 2013.

• June 26, 2014 — Hart County, KY / Fort Worth, TX: a multi-state felony extradition — Hart County takes her from Tarrant County Corrections in Fort Worth back to Kentucky (Case 14-CR-00055); charged with 2nd-degree burglary, 1st-degree criminal mischief, theft, and meth/marijuana possession. Her listed co-defendant is Daniel Jordan Steenbergen, a registered sex offender.

• August 22, 2014 — Clark County, OH: State of Ohio tax judgment lien (Case 14SJ1278), $1,836.56.

• September 2, 2014 — Clark County, OH: Jason Iddings files for divorce; summons directed to a Jacksonville, Florida address. Decree executed December 15, 2014, designating Iddings the residential parent.

• March 24, 2015 — Clark County, OH: police report over a custody conflict with a relative.

• October 21, 2015 — Montgomery County, OH: convicted of Possession of Cocaine (<5 grams), the result of the 2013 indictment; sentenced to five years’ probation and a six-month license suspension.

Phase IV — Florida transition, in-jail smuggling, maternal violence (2018–2021)

• February 7, 2018 — Clearwater, FL: arrested as a transient on an out-of-county fugitive warrant from Brevard County (failure to appear).

• July 9, 2018 — Jacksonville, FL: felony narcotics stop; co-defendants caught with crack cocaine and a loaded revolver; two crack pipes recovered from Rowland; charged with paraphernalia.

• January 22, 2019 — Jacksonville, FL: vehicle stop; powder cocaine and a concealed pipe recovered; charged with felony possession and paraphernalia.

• January 24, 2019 — Jacksonville, FL: inside the John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility, charged with a suite of felonies after allegedly smuggling crack cocaine into the facility; charges include Smuggling Contraband into a Detention Facility (F3), Sale of Cocaine (F2), Possession of Cocaine (F3), and Illegal Distribution (M1).

• July 20, 2020 — New Carlisle, OH: arrested after another domestic assault; found in an altered state; charged with Domestic Violence (M1) and Assault (M1).

• August 16, 2021 — Nassau County, FL: convicted of resisting an officer without violence.

• December 16, 2021 — Jacksonville Beach, FL: convicted of misdemeanor paraphernalia possession.

• December 30, 2021 — Nassau County, FL: felony carrying-a-concealed-firearm charge (Case 21CF000980AXYX), later dropped February 11, 2022.

Phase V — Advanced forgery, trespass, leaving the scene (2022–2026)

• February 25, 2022 — Jacksonville Beach, FL: passenger in a car with a stolen plate; marijuana found on her person; her purse holds blank checks, carbon paper, and a counterfeit check for $1,450.65 targeting a healthcare business; charged with Counterfeiting Bank Bills (F3), Forgery (F3), and marijuana possession (M1).

• September–November 2022 — Clark County, OH: a succession of failure-to-appear bench warrants and jail bookings in New Carlisle.

• April 5, 2023 — Nassau County, FL: convicted on two felonies — Burglary of a Conveyance (F3) and Grand Theft (F3) (Case 23CF000291); final adjudication October 19, 2023.

• August 11, 2023 — Nassau County, FL: driving on a suspended license; adjudicated guilty November 29, 2023.

• October 20, 2023 — Clark County, OH: Child Support Enforcement files contempt charges, directed to a Jacksonville address.

• November 14, 2023 — New Carlisle, OH: arrested for criminal trespass and a protection-order violation at a relative’s residence (Case 23CRB02803).

• January 25 – February 2, 2024 — Jacksonville, FL: contact and arrest at a vacant home; paraphernalia recovered; charged with trespass (M1) and paraphernalia (M1).

• August 1, 2025 — Nassau County, FL: leaving the scene of a collision involving property damage (Case 25CT000853); adjudicated guilty October 22, 2025.

• February 19, 2026 — Clark County, OH: the Ohio Domestic Relations Court issues a termination order in a long-running child-support matter, assessing outstanding court costs to Rowland.

Read as a whole, the record shows a person arrested across at least six states over twenty-five years — for theft, narcotics, forgery, solicitation, domestic violence — who has repeatedly required formal extradition and left outstanding warrants behind her, and who has never served a state prison term. Whatever that pattern means, it is the documented fact from which the next installment’s questions begin.

In the last installment the vehicles wouldn’t line up. In this one, almost nothing does. Who last saw Amanda, when she left Indian Lake, whether she ever reached Springfield, and when — and by whom — she was finally reported missing: on every one of those questions, the public record gives more than one answer.

The woman renting off the Avondale house

Start with something that, as far as we can find, has never been made public. Since April 2013, a woman named Janie Lynn Lochner (born March 11, 1974) had been living in an attached sub-room she rented from Danny at 937½ Avondale Street — the same address as Amanda and Danny. If anyone had a front-row seat to the chaos between them, it was Janie.

And there is a record entry that lands squarely in Amanda's timeline: at 2:39 AM on July 5, 2013, Lochner was arrested by the Ohio Highway Patrol for OVI — pulled over in a blue Ford Explorer, cited at .211 BAC (case 1307504). Her earlier record includes an April 2011 arrest for kicking and slapping her live-in boyfriend, Rodney Ragland, in front of responding officers.

What her July 5 arrest means for Amanda’s case, we can’t say — but a person living in Amanda and Danny’s house, arrested at 2:39 in the morning the same weekend Amanda is said to have left Indian Lake, is exactly the kind of witness the public file never mentions.

When did Amanda leave Indian Lake?

The date matters more than it looks. Change it by a few days and you change the witnesses, the vehicles, the phone calls, and the entire geography an investigator would examine. And the record gives two.

In the Missing in Ohio podcast (2019), Aliya recalls that over the “July 4th weekend” Amanda talked about returning to Springfield to reconcile with Danny; Aliya says she went to work the next day, 8 to 4, and came home to find Amanda gone. In 2013, July 4 was a Thursday — which places Amanda’s departure on Friday, July 5. In the later Unfound interview (2021), the sequence instead places her departure on or around Tuesday, July 9, and adds the gray-Cutlass driveway sighting. Both can’t describe the same departure.

Did she ever reach Springfield — and who saw her?

Everyone assumes yes. But trace the sources and it’s built entirely on family recollection, not documentation. The Springfield Police report lists her last seen July 7 at 360 Buxton — with Karla as the reporting party, and no explanation of who actually observed her there. Asked on the 2019 podcast whether Amanda made it back, Aliya answers, “She did… because my other sister seen her” — the sister being, apparently, Karla — with no date, time, or location. A later interview describes only a phone call in which Amanda asked for a ride back. The Springfield News-Sun (August 21, 2013) reported the July 7 Buxton sighting and quoted Aliya blaming the reporting delay on “family miscommunication.”

Put together, two separate eyewitness accounts describe two different moments — Aliya’s daughter watching Amanda leave Indian Lake, and Karla seeing her in Springfield. They aren’t necessarily contradictory. But no surveillance, transaction, employment record, or named, documented eyewitness independently places Amanda in Springfield after she left the lake.

A report filed a month late

The official missing-person report (case MP23304) was filed August 9, 2013 — by Karla — more than a month after the July 7 date it records. In the Unfound interview, Aliya references July 12 as the point she first went to police and, she says, was turned away. The News-Sun account (August 21) blames the gap on relatives assuming Amanda was with other family.

Aliya’s own account of those days is worth sitting with. She says her mother had just been hospitalized; when she started asking whether anyone had heard from Amanda, relatives assumed she was still at the lake. Her first stop, she says, was Danny’s house on Avondale — “no one was there.” Then she drove to Danny’s parents’ house on Beacon Street, and, before she could even open the gate, Danny and his mother came out saying they hadn’t seen or heard from Amanda — “like they had no clue why I was even there.” In the 2022 version, she says Danny himself came outside, and she told him, “You’re lying to me. You know where she is,” and he answered, “I haven’t seen her. Go away.” Then she went to the police, who, she says, would not let her file.

The Facebook that went dark

Modern disappearances leave a digital trail. Amanda’s is a question mark. Aliya says Amanda deleted or deactivated her Facebook because Danny didn’t want her using it. Yet researchers located a public profile — amanda.romine.39 — visible with activity through October 12, 2012, from which many of her 2012 posts were preserved. Whether that was her only account, whether it was deleted or merely deactivated, whether anyone accessed it after she vanished, and whether investigators ever pulled its records through legal process — none of it is answered in the public record. Facebook data could establish creation date, logins, devices, IP addresses, private and deleted messages, and any activity after her disappearance. Those are the questions that remain open.

What was she even wearing?

Three witnesses, three different answers: a white V-neck dress with pink pinstripes, cinnamon pantyhose, and beige sandals; a tan jogging suit; or black pants, a red sweater, and black shoes. The official report lists her clothing as “unknown.”

The things that don’t fit anywhere else

Some of the hardest facts in this case sit outside every tidy category:

• Amanda’s DNA — hair and skin — was recovered from a two-to-three-foot crawl space at a Romine property on 1064 Warder Street, where neighbors had seen Danny working; police later excavated, and no results of that search have been posted.

• A burn pile containing the remains of Amanda’s clothing was reported at the 937 Avondale house.

• Danny allegedly texted Karla Ward: "If she ever tries to leave me, I'll kill her."

• Amanda’s glasses were recovered near an access point to the Ohio River; her keys were left behind at the Avondale house. A drive from Springfield toward Horse Cave, Kentucky — the destination in the long-rumored “midnight run” — crosses the Ohio River near Cincinnati.

None of it, on its own, is proof of anything. Taken together, it is the reason this case will not rest.

Reconstructing Amanda Ward-Romine’s final days is an exercise in comparing public records against public statements — and watching them refuse to line up. The point of this installment is not to accuse anyone. It is to document, side by side, the contradictions that have complicated this case for more than a decade: the conflicting vehicles, the competing dates, the different accounts of what she was even wearing.

Three areas break down completely.

The vehicles. Three distinct descriptions attach to Amanda’s final movements, with nothing independently confirming which she was in: a late-1990s teal-green Chevrolet truck (Springfield Police missing-person report), an older gray Cutlass or Monte Carlo (an Unfound interview), and a Chevy El Camino (an Empty Pockets Live broadcast).

The dates. Two entirely separate departure timelines from the Indian Lake area — one pointing to Friday, July 5, 2013, another to around Tuesday, July 9 — and a missing-person report that wasn’t filed until August 9, nearly a month later.

The clothing. Witness descriptions vary across a white pinstripe dress, a tan jogging suit, and black pants with a red sweater. The official police report lists her clothing as “unknown.”

Our method here is deliberate. We don’t build timelines from interviews; we build them from documents, then ask a witness to confirm or deny. As Jimmy likes to put it — borrowing from Atticus Finch and every trial lawyer since — never ask a question you don’t already know the answer to. This case is a jumbled mess of times, dates, and locations, almost as if it were designed to confuse. Most disappearances run in a straight line: the victim goes to see someone, walks or rides or drives, and is never seen again. Amanda’s has no straight line at all.

And one question sits over all of it. From 2013 to today, the person fighting publicly for Amanda — the podcasts, the newspapers, the memorials — has been her sister Aliya. Her mother died in 2013, Danny in 2015, her father in 2019, and still Aliya pushes. But the sister who filed the actual missing-person report was Karla — a month late, on the very day she married Keith Coberly. Why Karla? And why then?

Where was Amanda even living?

The first problem is that we can’t fix the address Amanda was living at when she vanished. From October 2012 to July 2013 she was intensely transient — documented, at various points, at her father Karl and stepmother Carolyn’s, at her sister Aliya’s Indian Lake house at 27839 Township Road 130 (also recorded as Goshen Road 130), at 360 Buxton Avenue with Karla and Keith Coberly, and at 937 Avondale Avenue in Springfield. After the April 2013 assault she listed 11439 Elm Street in Lakeview. There are multiple “last seen” and “last known location” claims, and they can all be true, or none of them can.

There is also a knot in the geography worth holding: both Lakeview properties were once owned by David Lindsey and his late first wife — and Carolyn, Amanda’s stepmother, is listed as living at the Township Road 130 house. So Aliya may say Amanda was living with her, and it may be true, and it still doesn’t tell us whether Amanda was in Aliya’s presence in the days before she disappeared.

The three vehicles

A correctly identified vehicle is often the most valuable piece of a missing-person case — it points to who was driving, the route, the stops, and who else might have seen it. Here, instead of one vehicle, we have three, from three different sources.

• The teal truck comes from the Springfield Police missing-person report, which ties a late-1990s teal-green Chevrolet truck to Amanda’s last reported sighting on July 7, 2013, at 360 Buxton Avenue. The report does not say who owned it, who drove it, who described it, or whether police verified any of it.

• The gray Cutlass comes from an Unfound interview (2022), in which Aliya says her daughter watched Amanda get into an older gray Cutlass or Monte Carlo driven by an older white man with gray hair and a gray goatee.

• The El Camino comes from Karla, on the Empty Pockets Live stream, introducing a third, distinctly different vehicle into the record.

We take the daughter’s core statement at face value — that she last saw Amanda leaving the house — but not the specifics; there are too many contradictions in the make, model, and color to lean on any of it. So we did what the record allows: we audited who, in Amanda’s orbit, actually drove a vehicle matching each description.

The teal truck. By his own citation record, Daniel Romine was documented driving a 1990 blue Chevy pickup in 2014 (and a black Cadillac Eldorado in 2011). Amanda Young — the bartender long at Danny’s side — was cited in a blue Chevy truck in 2014. Both fit the “teal/blue Chevrolet truck” description loosely.

But the closest match to the teal truck is not a family member at all. Steve Eugene Wirgau is a Tier III sex offender who, at the time, lived roughly four miles from the Indian Lake house, at Lakeview Meadows (11900 Duff Road #58, Lakeview). He owned a 1998 teal Chevrolet Silverado (Ohio plate KEB8355). His record: a conviction for sexual battery (Ohio Revised Code 2907.03) on November 28, 2011 — and a release date of August 28, 2013, noted as “released early,” weeks after Amanda vanished.

We can’t tell you what any of that means. A teal truck matching a description is not evidence that its owner did anything. What we can tell you is that the single vehicle the police report actually named — the teal truck — has more than one documented owner in Amanda’s geography, and one of them is a registered sex offender who was let out early, four miles away, the month after she disappeared. That is a thread the public record leaves dangling.

The gray Cutlass. Justin Minnick — Karla’s first husband — was cited driving a 1995 gray Oldsmobile Cutlass 4-door in 2010 and 2014, so it is entirely plausible he had it in July 2013. Aliya, in the Unfound interview, also floats the name “Larry” for the older driver — possibly her uncle, Larry Nott, Peggy’s brother.

The El Camino. No owner of a matching vehicle appears anywhere in the documented record. It stands alone — a third description with nothing behind it.

And Amanda’s own car?

The last vehicle Amanda herself is documented driving was a 1990 white Cadillac sedan — in 2002, eleven years before she vanished. But she wasn’t carless: Danny bought her a 2000 Chrysler Sebring she called her “pimp car,” and the April 14, 2013 assault report has her driving a pickup at a Speedway station when she fled him. Aliya’s repeated claim that Amanda had “no car” and needed rides everywhere is, like much else here, not what the paper shows.

That is the trouble with this case in one image: three vehicles, competing owners, and a missing woman whose own car keeps appearing and disappearing from the record.

To understand what happened to Amanda Ward-Romine, you first have to understand the man who claimed her, and the small, neon-lit kingdom he ruled.

Who Was Daniel Romine

Daniel “Danny” Michael Romine was born October 10, 1972, and died December 13, 2015. Earlier in life he was a heavy construction worker; later he tended bar at and helped run his father’s family-owned Whitie’s Tavern. He stood 5 feet 8 inches and carried 250 to 300 pounds — closer to 400, the coroner’s report would later note. He possessed a criminal history spanning 31 documented offenses, heavily featuring high-lethality domestic battery, strangulation, and narcotics.

Danny moved through Springfield with the heavy-footed confidence of a man who knew the terrain. His record was not a list of mistakes; it was a biography of aggression. It began in 1991 with a charge for receiving stolen property, but the violence surfaced fast: felonious assault in April 1992 (reduced to assault), aggravated menacing by August 1993, a menacing charge against a man named Timothy Eldridge in May 1997. He was even cited for “spotlighting wild animals” — a poaching charge that speaks to a man who liked to freeze his prey in the light and take what he wanted.

Whitie’s Tavern was more than a bar; it was a sanctuary for a slice of Springfield’s working class — welcoming by day, and by night a place where grievances were nursed, where alcohol fueled old vendettas, and where the loyalty of the regulars formed a protective wall around the owner’s kin. Danny Romine was the prince of that kingdom. And it was into it that Amanda Ward walked.

Amanda Ward-Romine

Amanda Ward-Romine was born to Karl E. Ward and Peggy (Nott) Ward on the chilly winter day of February 24, 1983. Springfield was the backdrop of her youth; she came up through Springfield North High School, tethered to a local family network.

By 2001 she reached for independence, taking addresses at 1614 Lagonda Avenue and 116½ North Plum Street — the crowded, overlapping house she shared with her sisters Aliya and Karla and Karla's first husband, Justin Minnick. Between 2001 and 2005 the neon glow of Dayton called, and she worked as a dancer and bartender, most notably at the Harem with her close confidante, Jessica Rowland, bouncing between Springfield and 354 Lancer Street. Trouble began as a low murmur — a July 27, 2002 citation for driving without a license, settled with an $80 bond in 2003.

It was in 2003, amid the grind of Dayton’s nightlife, that Amanda first locked orbits with Daniel “Danny” Michael Romine. As her sister Aliya put it, Danny began dating Amanda while she danced; when she went to prison, he sent her money; when she came home, they married. But that was years away, and the road there ran through other men and hard time.

In 2004 she settled at 3029 Idlewilde Avenue in Dayton, and on September 22, 2004, she married another man entirely — Michael S. Enochs, 14 years her senior, a man carrying his own history of explosive domestic violence and chemical dependency. The descent quickened: on November 4, 2004, she was indicted in Montgomery County for possessing less than a gram of crack cocaine, and given Treatment In Lieu Of Conviction that December. A failed urinalysis in May 2005 shattered her probation, and on September 9, 2005, the steel doors of the Marysville Women’s Correctional Facility closed behind her — a combined four years for state cocaine possession and one year in federal corrections for drug trafficking. Enochs filed for divorce a week later; the decree was stamped in March 2006 while she remained locked away.

Released from federal custody in 2009, Amanda sought sanctuary at 1114 Elm Drive near Indian Lake, and there she tethered her fate back to Danny — marking her skin with eternal devotion: “Danny” on one foot, “Romine” on the other. From 2009 to 2012 she poured drinks at Whitie’s Tavern, owned by Danny’s father. The violence was inescapable.

On June 23, 2009, a barefoot, sobbing Amanda flagged down police on East Main Street: Danny, on an all-night cocaine binge, had knocked her down, smashed her head into a concrete sidewalk, taken her keys and shoes, and broken her phone. He was jailed for domestic violence and assault — and the charges withered at the prosecutor’s request. On December 26, 2011, at 6:34 AM, she hailed officers from a red Jeep Wrangler with a worse account: Danny had forced his way through a window at 937 Avondale Avenue, pinned her to the bed, and choked her with a live phone-charger cord until she bit his hand to escape. He was arrested, and again released.

And then, inexplicably, the abused and the abuser married. A license filed March 20, 2012 was voided, then re-filed and solemnized on June 12, 2012.

The unraveling, in her own words

Between 2012 and 2013 Amanda’s fracture became painfully public on Facebook. On July 15, 2012, she mourned that her birth family skipped her wedding shower — “I guess I seen where I stood with them” — the kind of isolation abusers leverage. She flaunted a Chrysler Sebring Danny bought her, calling it her “pimp car,” and joked that she bartended “half drunk” while Danny, the “other owner,” was too. By September she was calling him a “loser,” threatening to return to the “Dixie Strip” to find “real men,” and dreaming of beauty school — of striking it big “anywhere but here.”

October 2012 became a diary of her unraveling. She fled the Avondale home to “start new” with her sister near Indian Lake; praised Danny at 1:20 PM one day and called him a “piece of shit” by 5:36 PM the same afternoon; declared she was divorcing; then returned to help him sober up, defended herself with a Swifty Sweeper handle and a glass candle holder, and was hit with a domestic-violence warrant of her own. Her posts peaked on October 15 — a photo of her rings; a territorial warning that she was “MRS. AMANDA ROMINE”; a celebration that Danny’s 50-day jail stint gave her “a safe window”; and, at 9:00 PM, a lament: “my husband has changed into an evil terrible person why did i do it?????” On October 30 she posted once more, and then went dark. Complete digital blackout.

She officially separated on January 1, 2013, moving permanently to Township Road 130 at Indian Lake. The court chased her for $340 in unpaid fees; she chased a divorce. And the abuse reached its crescendo on April 14, 2013: during a planned visit to Avondale to retrieve her belongings, an intoxicated Danny choked her, slapped her, and dragged her by the hair across a parking lot — while her right ankle was in a surgical boot from prior operations. She fled to a safe house at 360 Buxton Avenue, the home of Karla and Keith Coberly, and Danny was arrested for felony domestic violence. Between April and June she found quiet work at a bar called Coyote’s near Indian Lake, and prepared for her divorce.

The last days

The shadow fell completely in July. On July 5, 2013, Amanda left her sister’s home at Indian Lake to travel back to 937 Avondale Avenue in Springfield — her last known sighting in the city. The next day, July 6, she made her last voice contact, calling her sister Aliya and begging to be picked up and brought home. On July 7, community witnesses and local media placed her last sighting alive in the 300 block of Buxton Avenue. A haunting alternate account came on July 9, when Aliya’s 15-year-old daughter watched Amanda walk to the end of the private driveway at Township Road 130 and get into an unidentified gray 1980s Cutlass or Monte Carlo driven by an older, gray-goateed man named “Larry.” She was never seen or heard from again.

July 13, 2013 became the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s official “last seen” benchmark; by August 9, NamUs had logged her as an active missing-person case. And between July and September came the most chilling development of all: a tenant renting an apartment connected to Danny’s property told authorities that Danny had demanded he vacate instantly so that “work” could be done in a small crawl space beneath the floor. When a BCI forensic sweep scoured the darkness beneath those boards, investigators recovered hair and skin cells that matched Amanda’s DNA.

That is where her documented chronology ends — not with an answer, but with a crawl space.

In the last installment we followed the Ward family tree through Amanda’s parents and her sister Aliya. This is the other branch — the most tangled one. Amanda’s younger sister, Karla Suzann Ward, born October 7, 1985, has married seven times. Most of it is the private churn of a chaotic life. But two of the men she married sit squarely inside Amanda’s case: one is a convicted sex offender who was free in Springfield the summer Amanda vanished, and one she married on the very day she walked into the police station to report Amanda missing.

Marriage 1 — Justin Carlton Minnick

Justin Carlton Minnick (born February 2, 1980) married Karla on April 13, 2002. She was 16; he was 22 — an age gap that is itself an early marker of a controlling dynamic. The marriage collapsed in March 2004 with a divorce complaint that included a motion for Ex Parte relief, the legal mechanism used when a spouse needs immediate protection from abuse.

Minnick’s record runs dense and violent through 2000–2001: guilty pleas to two counts of domestic violence and resisting arrest (July 2000), an indictment for assaulting a police officer (July 2000), aggravated menacing and domestic violence (June 2001), and a protection-order violation (August 2001). Weeks after the 2004 divorce he was charged with three counts of felonious assault with a weapon — all three dismissed, a pattern of severe charges collapsing that often points to witness intimidation or non-cooperation. His documented file is the classic trajectory of an escalating domestic-violence offender.

Two threads tie him to Amanda. First, 116 North Plum Street: in 2001, Amanda, Karla, Aliya, Justin Minnick, and Phillip Hoelscher were all tied to that Ward-family address, and in 2001 Justin and Amanda shared that roof while Amanda worked nights at the Harem in Dayton. Second, a 1995 gray Oldsmobile — the car Minnick was cited driving in April 2010. Hold both the address and the gray car; they matter in the summer of 2013.

By the cold arithmetic of the record, Karla became pregnant in 2001, at 15, while Justin — then 21 — was often the only adult at the Plum Street house during Amanda’s long Dayton shifts. Beth’s question is blunt and, she is careful to say, only a question: was there a grooming relationship in those empty afternoons? No such crime was ever charged, and nothing in the record documents it; it is raised here as a question the timeline forces, not as a finding.

Marriage 2 — Robert Allen Geiger: the monster under the bed

By 2006, at 21, Karla married Robert Allen Geiger, 11 years her senior. His early record is licensing and drug-paraphernalia violations, but inside the marriage it turned physical. On April 24, 2007, after accusing Karla of infidelity, Geiger shoved her head into her car seat and struck her in the jaw; he was convicted of domestic violence in Clark County. In her statement Karla quoted him:

“Get out of my face or I’m going to kill you.”

Then came the phase that makes Geiger matter to this case. An investigation by the Fairborn Police Department established that on June 1, 2009, Geiger engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree-felony sexual conduct; on November 13, 2009, he was sentenced to four years and classified a Tier II sex offender, bound to 25 years of address registration. Karla’s second divorce complaint was filed while he was at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution; the decree was granted March 4, 2011.

Geiger was released, and after a 2012 hearing set his post-release control, he was free and living in the Springfield area in the summer of 2013 — the season Amanda disappeared. For Karla, the marriage had been “a terrifying detour into the darkest corners of human behavior.” For this investigation, Geiger is a documented, convicted sexual offender inside the family’s immediate orbit at exactly the wrong moment.

Marriage 3 — Kevin Richard Warner

Karla married Kevin Richard Warner (born July 3, 1972) on November 8, 2011 — she was 26, he was 39, continuing a pattern of much older men. Warner’s record is thin: a 1990 disorderly-conduct/intoxication charge and a handful of OVIs and license violations across 2002–2012. What matters is the timing and the geography. Karla divorced Warner on April 12, 2013 — two months before Amanda disappeared — and listed her new address as 354 Lancer Street, New Carlisle. That is the same address Amanda listed on a 2005 arrest record. The house belonged to James “Chuck” Pennington and Peggy Ward — Peggy’s longtime boyfriend — a shared family node both daughters passed through.

A note on the father: Karl Ward

The Lancer Street house is also where the family’s temper surfaces in the record. On December 9, 2006, Deputy Matthew Kerns documented threatening phone calls from Karl E. Ward to James Pennington after Peggy had her daughter Karla over. Karl, described as “highly intoxicated” and belligerent, called repeatedly; told the deputy he “did not give a shit” and that if jailed he’d “be out the next day.” He was charged with telecommunications harassment, a first-degree misdemeanor. It is a small file, but it sketches the controlling, volatile patriarch at the root of this tree.

Marriage 4 — Keith Alan Coberly: a wedding and a missing-person report

August 9, 2013 was an 82-degree, cloudless Springfield afternoon — a perfect day for a wedding. Karla Ward, a mother of five from three prior marriages, married Keith Alan Coberly, for the first time a man near her own age. Coberly was a widower: his first wife, Priscilla Ann, had died suddenly on February 10, 2012, at 27, two days after posting on Facebook that they had separated. On their marriage license, Karla and Keith listed a shared address: 360 Buxton Avenue.

That evening — 7:00 PM on her wedding day — Karla walked from the Clark County Courthouse next door into the Springfield Police Department and filed a missing-person report for her sister, Amanda Ward-Romine. The last-seen location Karla gave: 360 Buxton Avenue, on July 7, 2013. The same house the newlyweds shared.

That coincidence pulls an investigator toward the law of marital privilege — the reason it matters when a marriage begins. Confidential marital-communications privilege seals private words spoken during a valid marriage, but it protects words, not observations, and — critically — it does not cover anything said before the vows. A courthouse vow does not retroactively silence the past.

To be explicit: this is a lens, not an allegation of guilt against anyone.

Coberly’s own record is violent. He was convicted of two counts of child endangering (2003); in 2006, per Officer Roger Jenkins II’s affidavit, he beat a man bleeding from a head laceration and fled in a white Buick; in 2016 he threw a gallon of pink paint on a neighbor’s car after “snapping” over a stolen safe; and in August 2019, per Officer R. Hawley’s affidavit, he was arrested for domestic violence and assault after breaking a television, throwing his partner on a bed and choking her, and punching her brother.

Marriage 5 — Joshua Joseph Sagraves, and the pattern

Joshua Joseph Sagraves (born August 18, 1982) was an auto mechanic and tow-truck driver. Karla married him June 4, 2021, and divorced him July 13, 2023. Three months and sixteen days later, on October 29, 2023, Joshua died of cancer at 41. In his obituary, Karla was listed as a “special friend.”

Here the record stops being a list and starts being a pattern. Karla’s intervals between husbands shrank relentlessly — a year and eight months, then eight months, then three — and after Joshua’s death she remarried within three months and twelve days. Forensically, this reads less like a woman falling in love seven times than like what analysts call “branch swinging”: securing the next spouse before the current bond is even dissolved, an intolerance for being unattached, relationships as utilities rather than partnerships. As Beth puts it: she did not grieve; she reloaded. None of that is a crime. It is a behavioral baseline — chaos as a home address — and it is the water Amanda’s family swam in.

Marriage 6 — James Everett Delawder

Karla married James Everett Delawder (born April 16, 1980) on February 10, 2024 — 212 days after the Sagraves divorce, and, by a grim coincidence, exactly twelve years to the day after Priscilla Coberly’s death. Delawder’s record is a string of driving-under-suspension and no-valid-license citations from 2009 to 2026 — which raises Beth’s question of why a man refuses, for seventeen years, to hold a license. They divorced May 21, 2025. One small-world note from the record: the 832 Mound Street address where Coberly committed his 2006 assault is also tied to Delawder’s father and sister.

Marriage 7 — Oliver Alan Reed

Twenty days after the Delawder divorce, on June 11, 2025, Karla married Oliver Alan Reed (born January 2, 1982) — a gap so short that analysts treat it as a red flag in itself. Reed came with a violent, recent record. On February 21, 2021, per Deputy Whittemore’s affidavit, his then-wife Shelly Reed reported that Reed, highly intoxicated, threatened to “slit her throat,” shoved her, and grabbed her by the neck; deputies photographed finger-shaped redness on her neck and arrested him for domestic violence and assault. Shelly told deputies Reed had been visiting a “crack house” with an unidentified woman.

In January 2025 Reed was charged with violating a protection order that protected his minor daughter. Then, on February 13, 2025, per Officer K. Kitchen’s affidavit, Reed struck a man in the face with a hammer; the victim identified him from his BMV photo, and a felonious-assault warrant issued.

That case is a matter of public record:

Case No. 25CR0151 — State of Ohio v. Oliver A. Reed, Clark County. Indicted March 4, 2025 on felonious assault; pleaded guilty June 4, 2025 to the amended charge of aggravated assault (fourth-degree felony); sentenced July 2, 2025 to 17 months in the Ohio State Penitentiary; transported to Orient, Ohio on July 10, 2025.

Karla married a man on his way to prison — 20 days after her previous divorce, three-plus months after his hammer arrest.

There is a grim and tiresome arithmetic to murdered and missing women. While the public imagination conjures a stranger lurking in the dark, law-enforcement ledgers tell a more intimate tale: criminologists find that nearly half of all women who suffer a violent end are killed by the men who claimed to love them — husbands, boyfriends, or jilted lovers.

The CDC, through its National Violent Death Reporting System, found that nearly half — 49.9% — of all female homicide victims in the United States are killed by a current or former male intimate partner. When the exact precipitating circumstances can be determined, 55.3% of those homicides are directly related to intimate partner violence. These cases usually resolve neatly, because the motive is ancient and the residences are shared; when a body is found, investigators know where to look, and the suspect is disproportionately the man who shared her bed.

But what happens when the equation breaks — when the husband is already in the ground? When statistics fail, the net must widen, and it often falls upon the family tree. Data suggests that between 10% and 19% of these women are killed by their own blood relatives — parents, siblings, or extended branches of a poisoned vine.¹ Yet in the story of Amanda Ward-Romine, the file remains stubbornly open, and the math has not yet produced a conviction.

To comprehend Amanda’s disappearance, you must surrender the idea of a simple, linear lineage. The Ward family tree is a dense, thorny bramble overgrown with the tangled vines of repeated matrimony. Amanda’s mother and father were each married more than once. Amanda herself married twice. Her sister Aliya was a veteran of four marriages. Her sister Karla stood before an officiant no fewer than seven times.

When Jimmy and I investigate a disappearance, we rely on a person’s past to tell us why they vanished — establishing victimology through the extended social network of a family’s marriages. Murders are rarely random; they are the culmination of existing, intolerable stressors. Shaking a family tree can uncover long-standing feuds, retaliatory violence, or illicit family enterprises. It exposes the common drivers of premeditated ruin: money, property, contested wills, life-insurance policies, and drug debts. And it maps the “second ring” — the spouses and in-laws who are trusted with a family’s daily rhythms and home layouts, but who are not tethered by blood, and who in domestic tragedies are historically the most likely co-conspirators.

In a tidy world, a deep dive into a normal disappearance takes about two hours. Consider Laci Peterson — 27, married, no criminal record, eight months pregnant when she vanished from Modesto on December 24, 2002. Police suspected foul play almost immediately; within a week, another woman came forward about an affair with the husband, Scott Peterson, and the trail led where such trails usually lead. You always start with the husband.

But Springfield is not a tidy world, and Amanda already lived at the margins. Her world was neon-lit and populated by ghosts and grifters, where registered sex offenders circled her family like sharks. To understand her life, we have to navigate her work as a dancer, her drug-use associates, the confidants she made in prison, and the endless love triangles around her and Danny — complicated further by the new loyalties her sisters’ many marriages kept dragging into her orbit.

The Parental Foundation

The structure is anchored by Karl E. Ward and Peggy J. Nott. Karl was born August 17, 1948, in Dayton, served in the Marine Corps, drove a truck, and late in life worked for Dancer Trucking — the company owned by his daughter Aliya’s fourth husband, Dennis Dancer. Karl died October 28, 2019, at 71.

Peggy was born May 2, 1958, in Springfield, one of twelve children of William Nott and Edna Uptergraph-Nott. One of Edna’s sons, Larry J. Nott (born September 2, 1975), is Amanda’s maternal uncle, and he plays a critical part later in this story. Before Karl, Peggy had a son in 1977 named Bruce — his father a man named James Lee. (Yes: Bruce Lee. The names in this case are not always subtle.) Karl and Peggy married October 12, 1984, a tumultuous union with repeated police calls and domestic-violence arrests; they divorced in 1991. Peggy later took up with a man named James Pennington, her longtime boyfriend until her death. Peggy died August 16, 2013, at 55 — exactly one week after her daughter Amanda was officially reported missing.

Karl’s second wife was Carolyn Ruth (Pedigo) Lindsey, born May 7, 1939, in Knox County, Tennessee. The court record is silent on the marriage certificate — social media points to 1994 — but notes an attempted 1996 divorce that was invalidated and never re-filed. Carolyn had two sons by Paul E. Lindsey; one of them, David Lindsey (born December 31, 1956), would later create a strange marital loop inside this family. Hold that name.

Karl and Peggy had three daughters: Aliya (May 8, 1981), Amanda (February 24, 1983), and Karla (October 7, 1985). If you follow the math, two of the three were born before their parents married in 1984.

The half-brother next to the tavern

Bruce — Peggy’s son, born 1977 — matters for one reason of geography. In 2012 and 2013 he lived at 1064 Warder Street, next door to Whitie’s Tavern at 1070 Warder Street, tying him directly to the Romine family’s turf.

In August 2012, Bruce was arrested for domestic violence against his partner, Amy L. Swyers, during an argument as the couple faced eviction from that address. He left the relationship, and the records indicate he has never married.

Amanda’s own life and marriages — and the day Springfield finally called her disappearance a homicide — are the subject of a later installment. For now, we map the family around her, beginning with her older sister.

Aliya’s Four Marriages

Aliya Marie Ward (born May 8, 1981) married four times. The bare record is in the table above; the meaning is in the overlaps.

Marriage 1 — Phillip Lewis Hoelscher. Aliya married Phillip (born October 1978) on September 30, 2000, and divorced him March 1, 2008. This union produced the first of the Ward grandchildren, including a daughter — Amber Hoelscher — who would later be a witness to the digital and social interactions preceding Amanda’s disappearance. Through court records (parking, traffic, criminal, probate, and civil), Phillip’s and the family’s addresses can be tracked year by year, and two facts jump out.

First, a shared family node. On June 11, 1999, Aliya listed her address as 116 North Plum Street, Springfield. Nearly three years later, in April 2002, her sister Karla listed the same address for her own marriage. By 2001, Amanda, Aliya, Karla, Justin Minnick (Karla’s first husband), and Phillip Hoelscher were all tied to 116 (or 116½) North Plum Street — a long-term Ward family residence and a hub through which two future in-law husbands entered the family.

Second, a pattern of volatility and entanglement. On April 13, 1999 — months before Aliya is documented at Plum Street, and a year and a half before the marriage — Phillip had a domestic-violence/disorderly-conduct incident at Oak and Kewton (the DV charge was dismissed; he pleaded to reduced disorderly conduct). Whether or not Aliya was the victim, it establishes a baseline. And years after their 2008 divorce, the entanglement persisted: on July 2, 2008, Aliya married David Lindsey while listing 2807 Lansing Drive #3 in Dayton; she divorced Lindsey September 6, 2011; and just 22 days later, on September 28, 2011, Phillip Hoelscher is documented using that same Dayton apartment. Aliya has a child with Phillip, and it appears the two reunited immediately after her second divorce. The Phillip–Aliya line was never fully severed.

Marriage 2 — David Lindsey, the loop. This is where it gets strange. David E. Lindsey (born December 31, 1956) was Carolyn’s son — which made Aliya’s second husband her own stepbrother. He was also 24 years her senior. David had been married before, to Janice Elaine Lawson (married 2001; Janice died January 14, 2007); through her estate, David took control of Indian Lake–area property worth well over $100,000 — the houses at 27839 Township Road 130 (also recorded as 27839 Goshen Road 130), Lakeview, and at 11439 Elm Street, Avondale-Lakeview — along with vehicles, a motorcycle, a 2000 Corvette, a teaching retirement fund (~$125K), and Janice’s annuity (~$120K). Aliya, by contrast, brought a 2005 Dodge Caravan, a couch, and a bed.

That Township Road 130 address is not incidental. In late 2012 and into 2013 — up to the day she disappeared — Amanda listed 27839 Goshen Road 130, Lakeview as her residence. It is the address police reports tie to “a gray car” that allegedly picked Amanda up and drove her to Springfield to see Danny Romine, and the address near Coyote’s, the bar where she worked less than a mile up the road. We will return to all of it.

Marriage 3 — Chad W. Taylor. Aliya married Chad Taylor (born July 1986) on February 24, 2016, and divorced him February 12, 2020. Chad builds high-end funeral coaches for a nearly-150-year-old specialty manufacturer in Lima — he lists his work address as his residence. The marriage carried its own court paper trail, including a 2019 theft charge.

Marriage 4 — Dennis Dancer. In 2020, Aliya married Dennis Dancer (born August 1968), co-owner of Dancer Logistics, a Delphos trucking and warehousing firm. Dennis employed Aliya’s father, Karl, until Karl’s death. Aliya and Dennis are still married and live in Delphos.

What Does This Mean for Amanda?

By now you’ve likely noticed what investigators notice: these are not isolated lives. They form an interconnected social network in which marriages, divorces, shared residences, criminal histories, and family ties continually overlap. In a case like Amanda’s, those intersections often matter more than any single event seen in isolation.

What does that mean for Amanda Ward? As you’ll see in what comes next, it may have everything to do with her homicide. And we have not yet reached the most tangled branch of this tree — Karla, and her seven marriages.

The Suspect

In the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and death of Amanda Ward-Romine, the status of her husband, Daniel M. “Danny” Romine, is distinctly classified by law enforcement and separates him from other individuals in the case periphery.

Daniel M. Romine is officially considered by the Springfield Police Division a suspect in the disappearance and homicide of his wife, Amanda Ward-Romine.

Unlike peripheral figures whose documented criminal histories merely place them in the ambient geographic or social network of the victim, Daniel Romine’s connection to the case is direct, central, and formally recognized by investigating authorities. Based on his intimate proximity to the victim, their established domestic history, and the timeline surrounding her vanishing, investigators have actively designated Daniel Romine as a suspect.

As her husband, his actions, movements, financial motives, and known associations during the critical window of Amanda’s disappearance remain a foundational focal point of the homicide investigation. While Daniel Romine’s subsequent death precludes formal prosecution, his official classification as a suspect remains a critical element of the open case file and the ongoing pursuit of definitive answers regarding the fate of Amanda Ward-Romine.

Eight Theories

As we begin our next case, we again build a comprehensive investigative framework for Amanda Ward-Romine. Every serious investigation begins by identifying every reasonable explanation for a person’s disappearance before the evidence begins eliminating them one by one. These eight theories need to be organized by their proximity to the victim, categorized by network proximity and the specific investigative focus required for each.

The Inner Circle (Highest Statistical Probability)

Historically, violence and concealment are perpetrated by those who share the tightest physical and emotional spaces with the victim.

• The Husband / Intimate Partner: Statistically, this is always the primary vector of investigation. Intimate partner violence rarely results in spontaneous disappearance; it follows a predictable escalation. The focus here is identifying the precipitating event — was there a recent separation, an escalation in control tactics, or a financial rupture just prior to her disappearance?

• Sororicide: While statistically the rarest form of intrafamilial homicide, it becomes highly relevant if the sisters were operating in a “closed psychological system.” The investigation must look for a failed separation, a toxic “parasite and host” caretaking dynamic, or a sudden, explosive dispute over scarce resources or weaponized family secrets.

The Underworld and Systemic Vectors (High Network Exposure)
