Amanda Ward-Romine vanished from Springfield, Ohio, in the summer of 2013. Weeks passed before anyone with a badge wrote her name on a missing-person report — and by then, the evidence had already begun to disappear with her.
They call Springfield the Champion City — a name forged in the clamor of the foundries that once built the machines that fed the world. This is the story of one of its ghosts. Amanda Ward-Romine was a daughter, a sister, and a wife who stood barely 5 feet 2 inches tall and lived her whole life inside a tightening circle of taverns, addiction, and a marriage that the record shows was violent long before it was over. When she vanished in July 2013, her disappearance was not treated as an emergency; it was treated as the predictable end of a “lifestyle.” Weeks went by before a report was filed. Two months later, forensic investigators would recover DNA matching Amanda from a crawl space beneath a property connected to her husband. For decades, women like Amanda have been vanishing from this same environment, their cases collecting dust in the cold, quiet archives of the unsolved. This is the case file. We will keep it open, and we will keep it current, until there are answers.
